Memory Chip Stocks Rally as AI Demand Outpaces Supply
Shares of memory and storage companies surged following warnings of AI supply constraints and U.S. government opposition to Apple purchasing Chinese chips.
Shares of memory and storage companies, including SanDisk, Western Digital, and Micron Technology, rallied on August 17, 2026. The surge followed comments from Elon Musk, who identified memory as the binding constraint on AI, suggesting that chip supply is failing to keep pace with infrastructure demand.
Geopolitical pressure further fueled the rally after U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated the Trump administration opposes Apple Inc. purchasing Chinese memory chips. This policy is expected to sustain shortages and benefit non-Chinese suppliers such as Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix.
Corporate outlooks also contributed to the momentum. SanDisk recently projected mid-to-high-teens annual revenue growth and 80% gross margins for fiscal 2028 through 2030. Micron Technology management echoed these tight conditions, indicating that demand for DRAM and NAND will likely exceed supply beyond 2027.
