Pharma Companies Expand Obesity Portfolios Beyond GLP-1 Agonists

Pharmaceutical companies are diversifying obesity treatments by targeting novel biological mechanisms and developing oral delivery methods for rare and syndromic conditions.

Major pharmaceutical companies are diversifying their obesity treatment strategies by moving beyond GLP-1 agonists toward novel biological mechanisms and improved delivery systems. Novo Nordisk has expanded its reach through multiple agreements, including a $300 million upfront deal with Hengrui for a once-weekly oral drug and the acquisition of three non-incretin programs from Kallyope.

Other industry leaders are pursuing high-value licenses and specialized pathways. Roche licensed an experimental therapy from Rona targeting the ALK7 protein for a potential $1.16 billion. Simultaneously, several firms are focusing on the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) pathway to treat rare obesity conditions like Prader-Willi syndrome and hypothalamic obesity. Rhythm Pharmaceuticals recently launched its approved MC4R agonist, IMCIVREE, in Japan on October 13.

Smaller biotech firms are also advancing MC4R-targeted pipelines. Superluminal Medicines raised $60 million to develop a selective oral small molecule agonist. Palatin Technologies is developing long-acting peptide and oral drugs for rare obesity, with Phase 1 trials for its lead peptide expected in the first half of 2027 and its oral program in the second half of 2027.
