Cook Islands Party Wins Fifth Consecutive Election Victory

The Cook Islands Party secured 11 seats in parliamentary elections, requiring support from independents or the opposition to form a government.

The Cook Islands Party (CIP) secured its fifth consecutive election victory in parliamentary elections held on Wednesday. Preliminary results show the CIP won 11 seats, while the opposition Cook Islands United Party took 4 seats and independent candidates won 7 seats.

Because 13 seats are required to form a government, the CIP must seek support from independent lawmakers or the opposition to maintain power. Caretaker Prime Minister Mark Brown leads the CIP in these negotiations.

One final seat remains undecided pending a vote on Nassau island. Voting there was delayed due to bad weather and is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
