Amazon Urges Engineers to Prioritize Business Outcomes Over AI Usage

Amazon issued new guidelines for software engineers to prioritize customer impact and business outcomes over the raw usage of artificial intelligence tools.

Amazon has introduced new guidelines for its software engineers to prioritize business outcomes and customer impact over the raw usage of artificial intelligence tools. In a memo published Tuesday, Terk Terkowitz, Amazon's vice president and distinguished engineer, introduced the concept of the Renaissance Developer, a model where human judgment and machine intelligence combine to accelerate product creation.

The guidance follows internal friction regarding the use of leaderboards and metrics, such as token consumption and lines of code. Some employees expressed concern that these metrics rewarded wasteful activity over actual productivity. Terkowitz warned that using usage metrics as targets could lead to tokenmaxxing rather than improved software.

While Amazon maintains that AI should remain at the center of software engineering practice, managers are now encouraged to analyze both high and low AI adopters to determine if tool usage translates into faster delivery. Engineers who cannot currently benefit from AI tools are expected to document the reasons why.
