BJP and Congress Clash Over Datia Assembly By-Election

The Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress trade victory predictions for the July 30 Datia Assembly by-election in Madhya Pradesh.

The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress are engaged in a prestige battle for the Datia Assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh. The by-election was triggered by the disqualification of Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti following a fraud conviction. The BJP nominated Ashutosh Tiwari to reclaim the seat, while the Congress fielded Kunwar Ghanshyam Singh to maintain its hold. Sanjana Singh Kinnar of the Bharatiya Gan Warta Party is also contesting, emphasizing transgender representation.

Campaigning has intensified with conflicting victory claims. Senior BJP leader Narottam Mishra predicted his party would win by approximately 20,000 votes. In contrast, Madhya Pradesh PCC Chief Jitu Patwari and leader Abdhesh Nayak both predicted a Congress victory by a margin exceeding 25,000 votes. Patwari cited public enthusiasm and BJP failures regarding youth, farmers, and OBC reservations as key drivers for the projected win.

The contest has also been marked by internal party dynamics, as Patwari worked to ensure Abdhesh Nayak and his supporters remained with the Congress amidst rumors of defection. The Election Commission of India has scheduled polling for July 30, with results to be counted on August 3. Because 22 candidates are running, polling stations will utilize Electronic Voting Machines with two ballot units to accommodate the full list of names.
