Tamil Nadu Government Presents Maiden Budget Amid Political Tension

Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson presented the maiden budget of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led coalition government on August 5, 2026. The budget allocates 2,000 crore for a new AI policy to teach robotics and AI, 2,000 crore for laptops via the Tamil Nadu Vetri Madikanini Thittam, and 3,200 crore for student hostels through public-private partnerships. Other key provisions include 200 units of free monthly electricity and 560 crore for the gold ring scheme for newborns, known as the Thaai Maaman thanga modhiram thittam.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay directed that the budget be comprehensive and aligned with the Vetri Tamilagam Vision Plan and previous election manifesto promises. In addition to the general budget, Agriculture Minister R. Vinoth is scheduled to present a separate Agriculture Budget on August 6, focusing on irrigation and the rural economy. These initiatives come as the government manages a state debt of 13.18 lakh crore, as detailed in a previously released White Paper.

The budget presentation occurred during a period of political volatility. DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested for alleged remarks insulting a woman's modesty before being released by the Madras High Court. M.K. Stalin condemned the arrest as political vendetta intended to exclude the opposition from the Assembly session, while Udhayanidhi Stalin claimed the arrest was a diversion from the government's inability to alleviate farmers' distress.
