Iranian Foreign Minister Proposes Regional Security Framework in Baghdad

Seyed Abbas Araghchi met with Iraqi leaders to discuss regional stability and the implementation of a peace memorandum between Iran and the United States.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi visited Baghdad on June 28 and 29, 2026, to meet with Iraqi President Nizar Amedi, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, and other high-level officials. Araghchi advocated for a homegrown, collective security framework for West Asia and the Strait of Hormuz to replace foreign military interference.

The discussions focused on the implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed June 17 and 18, which ended a war between Iran and a U.S.-Israeli coalition. Araghchi warned that continued Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon violate the 14-point agreement and threaten regional stability. These diplomatic efforts follow a period of active conflict, including U.S. strikes on Iranian targets and Iranian strikes on U.S. positions following disputes over shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Prime Minister al-Zaidi expressed Baghdad's strong support for diplomacy and dialogue to end regional wars. Beyond security, the officials addressed bilateral issues including Iraqi debt payments to Iran, border security, and the prevention of anti-Iran groups operating from Iraqi territory. Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps signaled its readiness to respond decisively to further ceasefire breaches, while the U.S. and Iran scheduled technical talks in Doha, Qatar, for Tuesday to resolve shipping security disputes.
