Czech Parliament to Approve Bill Increasing Budget Deficits

The Czech parliament will approve a bill loosening budget rules to fund infrastructure, healthcare, and nuclear power expansion.

The Czech parliament is set to approve a bill that loosens budget rules to increase deficits for investment and social expenditure. Andrej Babis, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, intends to allocate the additional funding toward upgrading the highway network, improving hospitals, and expanding nuclear power plants.

Finance Minister Alena Schillerova stated that the 2027 central budget deficit will rise to a maximum of 400 billion koruna, an increase from 310 billion koruna this year. Schillerova described the previous cap of 150 billion koruna as unacceptable. The government has pledged to maintain the overall public finance gap below the European Union's 3% limit.

The policy has faced opposition from President Petr Pavel and the nation's independent fiscal watchdog, both of whom warn that the move risks long-term budget sustainability. Despite a previous veto from President Pavel, the ruling coalition possesses enough votes in parliament to override the decision and pass the legislation.
