Ethiopian Forces Seize Mekelle as Regional Tensions Escalate

Ethiopian federal forces and allied militias recaptured Mekelle from the Tigray People's Liberation Front, triggering a diplomatic rupture with Eritrea and wider regional instability.

Ethiopian federal forces and the Tigray Peace Force seized control of Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, on October 4. The takeover followed the recapture of Alula Aba Nega Airport and a tactical withdrawal by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which stated it had "temporarily moved out of Mekelle" to avoid urban destruction. The TPLF, leading a seven-party alliance, had launched an offensive on September 23 to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali from power, seizing airports in Mekelle, Axum, and Shire.

The conflict has expanded beyond Tigray into the Afar and Amhara regions, with reports of drone strikes hitting the capital, Addis Ababa. TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael characterized the fighting as a "continuation of the previous war" and a regional struggle for control of the Red Sea, vowing to continue guerrilla-style attacks.

Diplomatic relations have collapsed as Ethiopia severed ties with Eritrea, expelling 10 diplomats and closing its embassy in Asmara over allegations that Eritrea, Sudan, and Egypt supported the rebels. Eritrea denied these claims, accusing Ethiopia of planning an invasion to secure coastline access. In response to the crisis, the presidents of Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia, along with the head of the Sudanese Armed Forces, met in Alamein, Egypt, to prevent a wider regional war. Tommy Pigott of the U.S. government warned that the Horn of Africa cannot sustain another humanitarian crisis.
