India Maintains LPG Supply Amid Strait of Hormuz Closure

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas of India reports stable fuel prices and normal LPG deliveries despite disruptions from the West Asian crisis.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas of India reported stable domestic LPG supplies and unchanged retail prices for petrol and diesel between May 6 and May 8, 2026. This stability follows disruptions caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and a broader West Asian crisis.

LPG delivery volumes increased over the period, rising from 87.28 lakh cylinders delivered in the two days ending May 6 to over 97 lakh cylinders by May 8. To ensure fair distribution and prevent diversion, the government utilized authentication codes for 95% of deliveries, while online bookings reached 99% by the second report. Public sector oil companies also increased local LPG production and expanded awareness camps for 5-kg cylinders, targeting urban migrant workers with over 10,700 sessions since April 3.

To combat hoarding and black marketing, the government intensified enforcement actions. Between May 6 and May 8, authorities conducted more than 4,000 total raids, resulting in penalties for 378 LPG distributorships and the suspension of 76 others. Officials have advised citizens to avoid panic purchasing and rely exclusively on official information sources.
