Northrop Grumman Corporation and Aeronix, Inc. announced a multimillion-dollar strategic joint investment on August 12, 2026, to develop next-generation space-based cryptographic systems. The partnership focuses on engineering hardened, reprogrammable encryption platforms for low Earth orbit satellite networks, with the goal of increasing processing throughput and transmission speeds for classified data five-fold.
The initiative integrates Aeronix's NSA-certified firmware with Northrop Grumman's microelectronics packaging to support high-bandwidth optical and radio frequency links. This development follows previous collaborations for the United States Department of Defense, including a Space End Crypto Unit prototype created for the United States Space Force to secure space mesh networks.
The project supports the United States Department of Defense's transition toward proliferated low Earth orbit architectures, specifically the Space Development Agency's Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. Engineering development units will undergo security evaluation and environmental testing through 2026 and 2027.
