Mike Rogers and Abdul El-Sayed Set October 8 Debate

Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed have agreed to hold their first debate on October 8 ahead of the November election for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by retiring Senator Gary Peters. The contest is rated as a toss-up by the Cook Political Report and is viewed as a key race for control of the Senate.

Rogers, a former congressman and FBI agent endorsed by President Donald Trump, is campaigning on a platform of tax cuts, manufacturing revitalization, and a moratorium on new data centers. El-Sayed, a former Detroit health official, is running on a progressive agenda that includes the nationalization of AI, a single-payer healthcare system, and the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The candidates have engaged in sharp rhetoric leading up to the event. Rogers has characterized El-Sayed as an extremist, while El-Sayed has accused Rogers of being excessively obedient to Donald Trump. El-Sayed noted that he has accepted every debate invitation and previously challenged Rogers to five separate debates.
