BSE Ltd to Replace Wipro in Nifty 50 Index

NSE Indices will replace Wipro with BSE Ltd in the Nifty 50 index on September 30, marking the first time a stock exchange joins the gauge.

NSE Indices Ltd announced that BSE Ltd will replace Wipro Ltd in the benchmark Nifty 50 index effective September 30, 2026. The decision follows a semi-annual review by the Index Maintenance Sub-Committee (Equity), which found BSE's average free-float market capitalization of Rs 1,40,879 crore is at least 1.5 times that of Wipro's Rs 55,930 crore.

This marks the first time a stock exchange operator has been added to the gauge, which is tracked by passive funds with over $40 billion in assets. The reshuffle occurs as BSE gains market share in equity derivatives from the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd, which is preparing for its own public listing later this year. Nuvama Institutional Equities estimates the inclusion could trigger approximately $741 million in passive fund inflows into BSE shares, while Wipro faces significant outflows.

Wipro, whose shares have fallen nearly 31% this year amid weak discretionary technology spending, will move to the Nifty Next 50 index. The removal reduces the overall weight of IT services stocks in the index, reflecting investor concerns over generative AI and slowing global spending. Other changes include adding Hitachi Energy India, Polycab India, Vedanta Aluminium Metal, and Vodafone Idea to the Nifty Next 50 and Nifty 100, while excluding companies such as Indian Hotels and United Spirits.
