Italy Economy Stalls as Third Quarter GDP Remains Unchanged

Italy's economy showed no growth in the third quarter of 2026, missing expectations due to declining industrial activity and weak foreign demand.

The Italian National Institute of Statistics reported that Italy's economy stalled in the third quarter of 2026. Preliminary GDP data showed zero growth quarter-on-quarter, falling short of the 0.1% growth analysts had expected. On an annual basis, GDP increased by 0.8%, slightly below the projected 0.9%.

Economic resilience was driven by domestic demand, agriculture, and the services sector. However, these gains were offset by a decline in industrial activity and a drag from net foreign demand. The current calendar-adjusted carry-over growth rate for 2026 stands at 0.8%.

This stagnation highlights persistent structural challenges within the Italian economy. The weakness in the industrial sector is particularly significant given its central role in supporting the country's export-oriented economic model.
