Kenya Begins Construction of Raila Odinga Mausoleum in Siaya

The Kenyan government and the Odinga family initiated the construction of the Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum on July 20, 2026. During a handover ceremony in Bondo, Oburu Odinga, leader of the Orange Democratic Movement, officially transferred the Kang'o ka Jaramogi site to the Kenya Defence Forces for implementation. The project honors the former Prime Minister, who died on October 15, 2025, in Kochi, India.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya directed military engineers to complete the construction within two months, promising that the fast-tracked timeline would not compromise quality. The mausoleum features a pentagonal design inspired by Luo traditions and the Pentagon Alliance, including five steps leading to the grave and digital archives accessible via QR codes. The broader project, overseen by the National Museums of Kenya, will integrate the site with the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum to create a heritage complex with libraries and galleries.

During the ceremony, Oburu Odinga criticized the initial design for lacking expected modernity and suggested modeling the facility after the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Lead architect Samson Malaki responded that the current work represents only the first phase, focusing on the burial site, while a second phase will establish a full Raila Odinga Centre with interactive exhibitions. Oburu Odinga also used the event to defend the Orange Democratic Movement's decision to participate in President William Ruto's broad-based government to maintain national unity.
