Yingiya Guyula Resigns From Northern Territory Parliament
Yingiya Guyula resigned as Member for Mulka after ten years, citing the government's failure to partner with Indigenous communities on child protection laws.
Yingiya Guyula, the Indigenous Member for Mulka in the Northern Territory Parliament, resigned from politics on August 19 after ten years in office. He cited the Country Liberal Party government's introduction of laws he described as "dehumanising, oppressing and destroying" Indigenous communities.
Guyula specifically criticized the government for changing child protection laws last month without community consultation. He characterized the government's ongoing actions as contributing to a "slow genocide" and claimed the administration treats Aboriginal communities as a "political football" while refusing to recognize Indigenous sovereignty.
Following his departure, Guyula intends to focus on community-led solutions on country and provide guidance to the next generation of Yolngu leaders.
