Taiwo Oyedele Unveils Fiscal Reforms to Boost Nigerian Investment
Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele announced five major fiscal reforms in Bangkok to attract investment and manage inflation following Nigeria's recent economic shifts.
Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele detailed Nigeria's economic strategy and unveiled five new fiscal reforms during meetings in Bangkok, Thailand. Speaking at the Africa’s Golden Future Forum and the Nigerian Investors’ Forum, Oyedele identified fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange liberalization, and tax reform as the primary drivers of the nation's recent economic shifts.
To build on these changes, Oyedele introduced five priority fiscal areas: agriculture and food security to fight inflation, power sector strategies, coordinated inflation management with sub-national governments, the reduction of regulatory burdens, and improved fiscal data management. He noted that excessive regulation currently costs Nigeria more than the combined revenue from corporate tax, personal income tax, and VAT.
While global financial institutions have praised the reforms for improving fiscal health, Oyedele acknowledged the severe cost-of-living crisis and inflationary pressures facing citizens. He highlighted the government's efforts to mitigate these impacts through education funds and cash transfers to over 10 million households. He emphasized that successful reforms require proper sequencing, consistent communication, and the institutionalization of policies into law to ensure long-term sustainability.
