Toyota Recalls Thousands of Hybrids Over Power Loss and Fire Risks

Toyota is recalling over 135,000 hybrid vehicles in the United States due to software defects in RAV4s and potential fuel leaks in Land Cruisers.

Toyota is recalling more than 135,000 hybrid vehicles in the United States to address separate safety defects involving power loss and fire risks. The recalls affect both the RAV4 and Land Cruiser models.

In one action, the company is recalling over 30,000 2026 RAV4 plug-in hybrids. A software issue could cause the hybrid system to reduce power or shut down completely while traveling at high speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will provide software updates at no cost, with owner notifications expected by early December.

Additionally, Toyota is recalling 105,794 Land Cruiser hybrid SUVs from model years 2024 through 2027. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identified a defect in a retaining clip between resin and metal fuel tubes near the gas tank. If the clip is displaced, the tubes may separate, creating a fuel leak that could ignite and cause a fire. This recall affects vehicles produced between November 29, 2023, and October 1, 2026.

Toyota estimates approximately 1 percent of the Land Cruisers may have the defect, noting 23 field reports and 64 warranty claims. Authorized dealers will inspect the connections and either install a supplemental clamp or replace the resin fuel tube free of charge. Notification letters for Land Cruiser owners are expected to be mailed starting November 29.
