China Coast Guard Monitors Philippine Resupply at Second Thomas Shoal

The China Coast Guard monitored a Philippine resupply mission to the BRP Sierra Madre following a period of heightened maritime tensions and diplomatic disputes.

The China Coast Guard monitored a Philippine resupply mission on October 21, 2026, at Ren'ai Jiao, also known as Second Thomas Shoal, in the South China Sea. Under a provisional arrangement regarding humanitarian resupply, a Philippine vessel delivered living necessities to the BRP Sierra Madre, a tank-landing ship grounded at the site since May 1999.

China Coast Guard spokesperson Jiang Lue stated that the agency verified the delivery vessel and monitored the entire process. While the mission proceeded with Chinese approval, Beijing maintains that the BRP Sierra Madre is illegally grounded on territory China claims as its own. The China Coast Guard declared it will continue law-enforcement and rights-protection operations in the Nansha Qundao and adjacent waters.

This operation follows a period of escalating friction. In September, a China Coast Guard vessel collided with a Philippine boat during a refueling mission, and the Philippine Coast Guard accused China of obstructing a resupply attempt on September 25. Diplomatic tensions further peaked on October 19, when the Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs summoned China's ambassador to protest remarks Manila characterized as a threat of the use of force, a claim the diplomat denied.
