Democrats Sweep California Statewide Offices and Legislative Supermajorities
Democratic candidates won all eight statewide offices and maintained legislative supermajorities in California's November 3 elections.
The California Democratic Party secured a comprehensive victory in the November 3 elections, winning all eight statewide offices and maintaining supermajorities in both the state Assembly and state Senate.
Xavier Becerra won his statewide race with 64% of the vote, defeating Steve Hilton. Richard Barrera, president of the San Diego Unified School District board, won the race for superintendent of public instruction with 57% of the vote against Sonja Shaw. The California Teachers Association provided $5 million in funding for Barrera's campaign.
California voters approved several ballot measures, including Proposition 1 for housing bonds, Proposition 38 for immunology research, and Proposition 42, which prohibits new personal property taxes. Voters also passed Proposition 3, making the 13.3% high-income tax permanent. However, voters rejected Proposition 40, a wealth tax on billionaires, along with Propositions 41, 43, and 45.
The state currently faces a projected annual deficit of approximately $10 billion. This fiscal challenge follows a recent revenue windfall generated by taxes on stock gains for high-income residents linked to the AI boom.
