Sandfall Interactive Evaluates Nintendo Switch 2 Port for Expedition 33
Sandfall Interactive is exploring a Nintendo Switch 2 port for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 despite significant technical hurdles related to hardware power and engine compatibility.
The game development studio Sandfall Interactive is exploring the possibility of porting its award-winning role-playing game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, to the Nintendo Switch 2. In interviews with Automaton Media, studio leadership expressed interest in the platform but cautioned that it is too early for a formal announcement.
Developers identified the transition as a significant technical challenge, noting that the Switch 2 lacks the processing power of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Because the game was built using Unreal Engine 5, the team found that many engine features are currently incompatible with the handheld hardware. The studio, which comprises approximately 30 people, relies heavily on Unreal Engine 5 tools such as Blueprints, Nanite, and MetaHuman for the title's quality.
To overcome these limitations, the team is monitoring updates from Epic Games, specifically the rollout of Lumen Lite. This performance-oriented version of the Lumen lighting system is designed to be easier to run on handheld devices. The studio intends to use these updates to determine if a port is feasible given their small team size.
