Supreme Court Extends Bengaluru Civic Election Deadline to December

The Supreme Court of India extended the deadline for Greater Bengaluru Authority civic elections to December 31, 2026, citing logistical challenges with voter roll revisions.

The Supreme Court of India extended the deadline for conducting civic elections across 369 wards in the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to December 31, 2026. A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant granted the extension after the GBA, the Karnataka State Election Commission, and the state government cited severe logistical challenges caused by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The court had previously extended the deadline from June 30 to August 31, 2026, and had criticized the GBA for using delaying tactics.

DK Shivakumar, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, stated that the state government is committed to holding the GBA polls in December. He intends to complete elections for all local bodies, including Zilla, Taluk, and Gram Panchayats, by the end of the year. Final electoral rolls for the state are scheduled for publication on October 19, 2026.

Officials argued that proceeding with unrevised rolls would create dangerous anomalies and undermine the integrity of the process. The region has been without civic elections for over six years, as the term of the GBA's predecessor, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, expired in September 2020.
