India Adds Record 52,537 MW of Power Generation Capacity

The Government of India added a record 52,537 MW of electricity generation capacity between April 2025 and January 31, 2026, marking the highest single-year increase in the country's history. This represents an 11 percent increase over the previous record of 34,054 MW set in the 2024-25 financial year. Renewable energy drove the expansion, contributing 39,657 MW of the total, with solar power providing 34,955 MW and wind power adding 4,613 MW. Thermal power contributed 8,810 MW.

As of January 31, 2026, India's total installed capacity reached 520,510.95 MW. For the first time, non-fossil fuel capacity, totaling 271,969.33 MW, has exceeded fossil fuel-based capacity, which stands at 248,541.62 MW. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi stated that India met its Paris Agreement target of deriving 50 percent of its installed capacity from non-fossil fuel sources in 2025, achieving the goal five years early.

These capacity gains and investments in transmission infrastructure reduced the national power shortage to 0.03 percent by December 2025, down from 4.2 percent in FY14. The government continues to pursue a target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and Net Zero emissions by 2070. These figures were highlighted in a backgrounder released during the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 in New Delhi, alongside reports that schemes like Saubhagya and the Integrated Power Development Scheme mobilized approximately Rs 1.85 lakh crore to electrify 18,374 villages and 2.86 crore households.
