SEBI Chairman Defends Indian Market Stability Amid Global Volatility

Tuhin Kanta Pandey states Indian capital markets remain stable due to a globally competitive disclosure-based regulatory framework and strong IPO performance.

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey stated in interviews with ANI that Indian capital markets have remained relatively stable despite persistent global turbulence. Pandey identified geopolitical tensions, rapid technological shifts, and cross-border capital flows as the primary drivers of worldwide market challenges. He characterized a certain level of volatility as inherent to financial markets, noting that while markets occasionally overreact to real-time information, data indicates volatility in India is not as high as in other jurisdictions.

Pandey emphasized that SEBI maintains transparency through a disclosure-based regulatory framework and mandatory reporting requirements. He described the current regime as globally competitive and focused on trust, transparency, and technology, utilizing real-time surveillance and upgraded infrastructure to oversee the market. He defended enforcement actions against insider trading and noted a period of reform aimed at balancing investor protection with the ease of doing business.

Highlighting India's economic growth, Pandey noted that the country ranked first globally in the number of IPOs in 2025, with more than 320 filings, and third in terms of total value. He asserted that capital markets are an essential instrument for development, requiring adequate regulation to ensure the investor trust necessary for the market to develop.
