IMF and World Bank Leaders Discuss AI Labor Market Shifts

International leaders and business executives discuss AI's impact on 40 percent of global jobs and the rise of specialized roles like Forward Deployed Engineers.

At the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group in Bangkok, Kristalina Georgieva warned that artificial intelligence could affect approximately 40 percent of jobs worldwide through augmentation, downgrading, or elimination. While some AI-replaceable roles have seen a 10 percent drop in hiring demand, speakers emphasized that the technology is expanding worker capabilities and enabling new entrepreneurial models, such as the One-Person Company.

Discussions focused on Small AI—affordable, task-specific tools for local needs—with applications ranging from crop disease identification in India to patient assessments in Indonesia. To mitigate displacement, leaders called for a shift toward continuous vocational training and lifelong learning to preserve human judgment and creativity.

Parallel shifts are appearing in specific labor markets. In India, demand is surging for Forward Deployed Engineers who combine generative AI expertise with customer engagement to implement practical business solutions. Data center job postings in India have also nearly doubled over the last two years. Meanwhile, in Canada, the federal government is targeting a 60 percent AI adoption rate for small businesses, supported by a Venture for Canada initiative that trains graduates to mentor small business owners in AI integration.
