Samsung Launches Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra

Samsung Electronics launched its latest foldable lineup featuring the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the premium Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8. The Z Fold 8 introduces a passport-style wide-fold design with a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch main display to reduce letterboxing during video playback. The Ultra model is the company's thinnest foldable to date, featuring a square aspect ratio, a 200 MP main camera, and a 5,000 mAh battery, priced at $2,099.

Both Z Fold 8 models utilize the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and run One UI 9.0 on Android 17, integrating Galaxy AI tools such as FanCam and Gemini Notebooks. Samsung plans an August software update to fix thermal and performance issues identified in pre-production units currently used for media testing and retail trials.

Consumer demand has varied by region. In the U.S., the standard Z Fold 8 experienced immediate shortages of lower storage configurations and specific colors, pushing shipping dates to August 21, while Ultra units remain available for August 7. In India, the lineup reached a record 271,000 pre-orders within 72 hours, with 45% of orders coming from Tier 2 cities.

Industry analysts are comparing the launch to an expected foldable entry from Apple, rumored as the iPhone Ultra. While the iPhone Ultra may offer a larger 7.8-inch display and battery, critics suggest its ergonomics may be less intuitive than the refined design of the eighth-generation Samsung devices.
