Nirmala Sitharaman Urges Tata Group to Resolve Leadership Dispute
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called for an amicable resolution to the governance conflict between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts over leadership and public listing plans.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urged the Tata Group to reach an internal resolution regarding a leadership and governance dispute between the conglomerate's holding company and its controlling shareholder. Speaking at the Financial Express Leadership Awards in Mumbai on November 2, Sitharaman emphasized that the group is a critical component of the Indian economy and must restore normalcy quickly.
The conflict involves a disagreement between the board of Tata Sons and Tata Trusts. The Tata Sons board approved a new five-year term for Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran and initiated steps for a public listing to comply with Reserve Bank of India regulations for upper-layer non-banking financial companies. However, Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata has opposed both the reappointment of Chandrasekaran and the move toward a stock market listing.
The dispute has drawn political attention, with Rahul Gandhi accusing the government of treating Indian businesses as playthings. Sitharaman countered these claims by criticizing the Congress party for politicizing the internal corporate matter and frequently resorting to the courts.
