UN Peacekeeping Mission to End Lebanon Mandate in December
Jean-Pierre Lacroix reaffirmed UN commitment to stability in Lebanon as UNIFIL prepares to conclude its mandate on December 31, 2026.
United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix reaffirmed the UN's commitment to peace and stability in Lebanon during an official visit to the country. The visit comes as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) prepares to reduce its strength and conclude its mandate on December 31, 2026.
During his visit, which included a stop at the UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura, Lacroix met with President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. The officials discussed the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and explored options for the period following the peacekeeping force's departure.
Lacroix expressed concern regarding the future of the Blue Line and the continued support of local communities in southern Lebanon. He emphasized the necessity of a third party to prevent uncontrolled escalation between the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Israeli army.
