Trump Administration Halts Illegal Border Wall Well Drilling

The Trump administration ordered construction crews building the U.S.-Mexico border wall to immediately cease drilling new water wells in New Mexico. The order follows complaints from cattle ranchers that industrial pumping for dust suppression and concrete production threatened livestock during a severe drought. The New Mexico Office of the State Engineer identified at least eight wells drilled illegally without required state permits, specifically on the Roosevelt Reservation.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated it will now collaborate with the New Mexico government and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop a comprehensive groundwater strategy. While the moratorium provided some relief to local ranchers, critics and industry groups questioned why contractors drilled new wells instead of purchasing water from existing local sources. Concerns also persist regarding the continued use of the wells already drilled illegally.

Political figures claimed credit for the intervention. Congressional candidate Greg Cunningham stated he raised the concerns of local families and officials with the administration, while Representative Gabe Vasquez claimed he advocated for New Mexicans' water rights on the House floor to stop the drilling.
