AfD Poised to Win Saxony-Anhalt State Election

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is poised to win the most votes in the Saxony-Anhalt state election, which would establish the party's first-ever state government. The party's manifesto calls for a complete overhaul of migration policy, including the creation of a remigration unit funded by redirected integration resources, separate education for refugee children, and the end of war refugee status for Ukrainians.

This political shift has triggered widespread alarm among migrants, refugees, and the Jewish community. The Advisory Council for Integration and Migration in Magdeburg reports that 80% of migrants in the state are considering leaving. Residents in Magdeburg have reported an increase in racist attacks and harassment, recalling a 2024 Christmas market attack.

Local officials and medical associations warn that a remigration offensive could collapse the state's healthcare system, as non-German citizens make up over 27% of hospital doctors. In response, the umbrella group Linha Amarela S.A. has appealed to other German states to prepare for an influx of refugees fleeing Saxony-Anhalt.
