Meta Acquires 419 VR Patents From Sony

Meta acquired 419 virtual and augmented reality patents from Sony as the Japanese company shifts its focus toward entertainment products.

Meta acquired 419 global patents related to virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality from Sony. The transfer, which included 43 US-specific properties processed between June and September 2026, marks a strategic pivot for the Japanese electronics giant.

Sony is transitioning its business model away from consumer electronics to prioritize entertainment products. This shift is further evidenced by the company's decision to skip the upcoming CES trade show in Las Vegas. While Sony found early success with the original PSVR on the PlayStation 4, the PSVR2 failed to gain significant market traction due to a lack of bespoke software support.

Meta continues to expand its presence in the sector following the acquisition. The company is currently developing new VR glasses scheduled for release in 2027, which are intended to replace traditional bulky headsets.
