U.S. Labor Unions Split Over AI Data Center Moratoriums

Major U.S. labor unions are divided over the construction of AI data centers, splitting between those prioritizing immediate job creation and those fearing long-term displacement. Construction-focused organizations, including the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, North America's Building Trades Unions, the Laborers' International Union of North America, and the United Association, oppose development moratoriums. These groups argue that data centers provide high-wage, stable careers for blue-collar workers and serve as critical infrastructure for national security.

In contrast, National Nurses United supports a nationwide moratorium proposed by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The union cites concerns over community impact and the potential for AI to threaten the nursing profession. The AFL-CIO occupies a middle ground, opposing blanket bans while advocating for stricter regulations to establish guardrails for AI development.

While local governments in New York and North Carolina have implemented moratoriums, the federal government is moving in the opposite direction. The Trump administration is accelerating federal permitting and backing the $500 billion Stargate Project, a joint initiative led by OpenAI and SoftBank.
