Tripura Holds First Village Committee Elections in 10 Years
Tripura conducted Village Committee elections on September 28 with approximately 75% voter turnout across 587 committees following a decade-long hiatus.
The Tripura State Election Commission managed Village Committee elections on September 28, 2026, across the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council regions. The polls ended a 10-year hiatus for village-level representation and followed directions from the Supreme Court. Voting took place across 1,095 polling stations using a paper-ballot system for 2,950 contested seats, while 1,644 seats were won uncontested, primarily by the Tipra Motha Party and the BJP.
Preparations began on September 27 with the deployment of ballot boxes and security personnel to ensure safe transport. By Monday afternoon, voter turnout reached 60 percent, eventually climbing to approximately 75 percent by the close of polling. To maintain order, the commission deployed 74 companies of Central Armed Police Forces alongside state police and rifles.
While election officials described the process as peaceful, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) alleged fraudulent voting and the obstruction of polling agents in Sepahijala and West Tripura. The Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed these claims as baseless. The State Election Commission stated that it took prompt action regarding reported disturbances. Votes are scheduled to be counted on October 5.
