UK Launches AI Biosecurity Lab With Tech Giant Support
The Government of the United Kingdom is investing £100 million to create an AI Biosecurity Lab to detect and monitor biological threats.
The Government of the United Kingdom announced £100 million in funding to establish an AI Biosecurity Lab dedicated to the detection and monitoring of biological threats. This initiative aims to enhance the state's capacity to manage risks associated with artificial intelligence technology.
To support the lab's operations, OpenAI and Anthropic are providing up to £200 million in AI model credits. Google DeepMind is also supporting the initiative, while the lab will partner with the life sciences company Basecamp Research Ltd to integrate biological expertise with AI capabilities.
In addition to the lab's establishment, the government allocated £65 million to develop countermeasures for pathogens as part of a broader strategy to mitigate biological risks.
