Pete Buttigieg Campaigns for Sean McCann in Toss-Up Michigan Race
Former Secretary Pete Buttigieg joined Democratic candidate Sean McCann at a Kalamazoo rally to challenge Republican incumbent Bill Huizenga in a toss-up congressional race.
Former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg campaigned for Democratic state Senator and Congressional candidate Sean McCann during a rally at the First Baptist Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Wednesday. The event, which drew approximately 300 attendees, comes as the Cook Political Report reclassified the race for Michigan's 4th House District from leaning Republican to a toss-up.
During the rally, McCann focused on housing affordability, Social Security, and government corruption. He specifically accused eight-time Republican incumbent Bill Huizenga of increasing his personal wealth five-fold while in office and criticized his record on insider trading and the operation of the J.H. Campbell Coal Plant. Buttigieg supported these claims by criticizing the current party in power for failing to lower costs and end corruption, arguing that voters across the political spectrum believe one job should be enough to live on in the United States.
In response, Bill Huizenga characterized McCann as out of touch for his association with Buttigieg. Huizenga defended the operation of the coal plant and argued that the Biden administration hindered affordable energy prices, stating that Michigan must return to being a net energy exporter to share its bounty with the world.
