India Monitors SpiceJet Finances and Rejects Festive Airfare Caps

Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu announced government scrutiny of SpiceJet's operations while ruling out mandatory airfare caps for the upcoming festive season.

Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu announced that the government and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are conducting operational and financial scrutiny of SpiceJet to prevent safety lapses. The airline is facing severe financial distress, including a domestic market share drop to 1.6% in July and reports of unpaid employee salaries for nearly four months. These struggles have led to flight cancellations and passenger protests at Delhi airport over delays to Dubai.

To stabilize the sector amid high fuel prices and geopolitical tensions in West Asia, the government approved the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0, allocating Rs 5,000 crore in credit support. SpiceJet has already received ₹150 crore through this scheme and recently finalized lease agreements for 20 aircraft to target 200 daily flights during its winter schedule.

Separately, Minister Naidu ruled out imposing a cap on airfares during the upcoming festive season. He attributed rising ticket prices to the West Asia crisis, noting that aviation turbine fuel accounts for 40% to 43% of airfares. Instead of mandatory ceilings, the government will hold regular meetings with airlines to advise them to maintain reasonable prices for travelers.
