Ofcom Investigates X Over Online Safety Law Breaches

Ofcom is assessing whether X breached UK online safety laws regarding illegal hate and terror content while monitoring SpaceXAI's AI chatbot restrictions.

Ofcom, the United Kingdom's media regulator, is assessing whether the social media platform X breached online safety laws concerning the handling of illegal hate and terror content. The regulator is determining if X complied with its legal duties to protect British citizens from illegal content.

X's first quarterly report indicates the company met commitments to review suspected illegal content within agreed timeframes. However, Ofcom maintains ongoing concerns regarding the effectiveness of these removal efforts and the level of engagement X has maintained with third-party experts.

Separately, the regulator is monitoring SpaceXAI, formerly xAI, following an investigation opened in January into the Grok AI chatbot's generation of sexualized images. In response, SpaceXAI introduced restrictions to prevent UK users from viewing or generating pornographic content and barred companion chatbots from engaging in sexually explicit conversations.
