Ebonyi State Conducts Peaceful Local Government Elections

Governor Francis Nwifuru and APC officials reported a peaceful voting process and high turnout during local government elections across Ebonyi State.

Local government elections took place across 13 local government areas and 171 wards in Ebonyi State on Saturday, August 22, 2026. Francis Nwifuru, the Governor of Ebonyi State, cast his vote at the Oferekpe Agbaja polling unit in Izzi Local Government Area, where he urged participants to view the process as a democratic exercise rather than a battle.

All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders and government officials praised the peaceful conduct of the polls and reported high voter turnout. Osbourne Umahi, an APC chairmanship candidate for Ohaozara, expressed satisfaction with the process, while Senator Anthony Ani described the event as evidence that the state has embraced democratic principles. Representative Kama Nkemkanma defended the elections against critics who labeled them a one-party contest, asserting that the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission allowed all interested candidates to obtain nomination forms.

Officials attributed the smooth exercise to the state's security architecture and the administration of Governor Nwifuru. While Commissioner for Works Lebechi Stanley Mbam predicted an APC sweep of all 13 local government areas, Commissioner for Special Duties Valentine Okike-Uzor urged the eventual winners to provide inclusive leadership for all residents regardless of their political affiliation.
