GitHub Copilot Switches to Token-Based AI Credit Billing

GitHub transitioned its Copilot AI tool from a flat subscription model to a token-based billing system on June 1, 2026. The new structure utilizes GitHub AI Credits, where each credit is valued at one cent. While inline code completions remain unlimited and free, features such as Copilot Chat, agentic sessions, code reviews, and Copilot Spaces now consume credits from a monthly pool based on the specific AI model and number of tokens processed.

The shift has triggered intense backlash from developers, particularly power users utilizing autonomous, multi-step agentic workflows. Some users reported projected monthly costs jumping from $29 to $750, with other estimates exceeding $3,000. Critics on social media have compared the move to predatory pricing, noting that some monthly quotas can be exhausted in less than a day.

GitHub Chief Product Officer Mario Rodriguez defended the change, stating the previous flat-rate model was unsustainable as the tool evolved from a simple assistant into an agentic platform with escalating inference costs. This transition aligns with a broader strategy from parent company Microsoft to move productivity, coding, and security services toward a hybrid of per-user and consumption-based pricing.
