Myanmar Rejects ASEAN Demand to Release Aung San Suu Kyi

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar rejected a demand from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations for the unconditional release of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The ministry stated that such demands interfere with the rule of law and the judicial process of a sovereign state.

In a further escalation of diplomatic tension, the military-backed government asserted that the role of the ASEAN special envoy is no longer necessary. The administration claimed its legitimacy stems from democratic elections, effectively dismissing the Five-Point Consensus roadmap which calls for an end to violence against civilians and expanded humanitarian access.

These developments occur against the backdrop of a civil war that has killed over 100,000 people since the 2021 coup led by Min Aung Hlaing. While the government continues to clash with the regional bloc, it recently permitted the International Committee of the Red Cross to meet with the detained Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
