India Positions as Primary Global Rice Supplier Amid Shortages

India aims to leverage a significant rice surplus to expand its international market as global production drops and demand rises.

India is positioned to become a primary global rice supplier as global production is expected to drop by 9% while demand rises by 14%. Despite production estimates being revised downward from 156 million to 146-147 million metric tons due to El Nino and other challenges, Dev Garg, National Vice President of the Indian Rice Exporters Federation, reports that India maintains a significant surplus of approximately 27 million metric tons over buffer stocks.

While other major producers including Thailand, Pakistan, and Vietnam face production stress, India's surplus is expected to exceed 40 million metric tons this year. However, the global trade faces headwinds from fertilizer shortages and rising marine fuel costs, which have increased from roughly USD 400-500 to USD 1,300-1,400. These factors have contributed to a 15% increase in global wholesale rice prices over the last four months.

Garg urged India to treat rice as a national strategic asset to support the 60-plus countries dependent on its exports. He characterized the current market conditions as a "golden opportunity" for the Indian agricultural sector to expand its international footprint.
