Microsoft and Alphabet Partner to Restart Nuclear Power Plants
Microsoft and Alphabet signed agreements with energy providers to restart nuclear power plants to support the electricity needs of their artificial intelligence data centers.
Microsoft Corporation and Alphabet have entered into separate agreements with Constellation Energy and NextEra Energy to restart nuclear power plants. The move aims to secure the massive energy loads required to operate artificial intelligence data centers.
This corporate shift aligns with a broader initiative by the United States Department of Energy to triple American nuclear output by 2050. As part of this objective, the agency is investing $80 billion to procure AP1000 reactors, which are manufactured by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
These developments position Canada's Cameco Corporation as a primary supplier of nuclear fuel. Cameco Corporation provided 17% of global uranium in 2024 and operates high-grade mines at Cigar Lake and McArthur River. The company also holds a 49% stake in Westinghouse, linking the fuel supply chain directly to the reactor construction planned in the United States.
