St. Louis Officials Deadlocked Over Data Center Regulations

City officials in St. Louis are deadlocked over the regulatory framework for proposed large-scale data centers. The dispute centers on a conflict between the St. Louis Board of Aldermen, which voted last month for looser rules, and the city's Planning and Urban Design Agency, which recommended more stringent restrictions.

The situation escalated last week when the planning commission rejected the Board of Aldermen's looser restrictions. During that meeting, executive director of planning and urban design Don Roe recessed the proceedings after receiving a text message from an unnamed elected official requesting that commissioners reconsider their decision. Roe did not reveal the identity of the official, and the office of Mayor Cara Spencer denied her involvement in the communication.

The planning commission's recommendation for tighter rules currently stands. The Board of Aldermen must now determine if it will override the commission's decision. This regulatory battle occurs amid public anxiety regarding the growth of artificial intelligence and the use of nondisclosure agreements to keep project details private.
