The Elder Scrolls 6 Release Expected After 2028

Bloomberg reports The Elder Scrolls 6 is at least two years from release despite internal playability and efforts by Xbox to accelerate development.

The Elder Scrolls 6 is reportedly at least two to three years away from release, according to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, suggesting a potential launch window of 2028 or 2029. This timeline follows the game's initial announcement by Bethesda Game Studios in June 2018, though the title has remained largely unseen since.

Development continues amid significant restructuring at Microsoft, which implemented 1,600 staff redundancies at Xbox and closed four studios. These cuts impacted dozens of programmers, artists, designers, and testers at Bethesda. Despite the losses, Bethesda boss Jill Braff stated the company will prioritize its strongest franchises, including The Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has identified the project as a high priority and intends to accelerate its development. This objective coincides with reports that Microsoft may make more high-profile single-player titles console-exclusive to increase hardware sales. While Bethesda director Todd Howard admitted the game was announced too early, both he and Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty have confirmed the title is playable internally and remains the studio's primary focus.
