Wes Streeting Warns UK Must Prepare for War by 2030
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting warned Britain has 1,000 days to prepare for potential conflict and launched a campaign urging households to stockpile emergency supplies.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting warned that the United Kingdom and its allies have slightly more than 1,000 days to prepare for a potential conflict, stating that Russia's military capacity and war economy could enable an attack by 2030. Streeting characterized preparing the country to fight and win as his defining priority, arguing that strengthening the armed forces is the only way to deter adversaries.
Alongside this warning, the government launched the Be Ready campaign, urging households to stockpile three days of essential supplies, including non-perishable food, bottled water, batteries, and cash. Streeting noted that these measures are intended to maintain resilience against a range of threats, including cyber-attacks, terrorism, extreme weather, and disruptions to critical infrastructure like undersea communications cables. He emphasized that the public should be alert, not alarmed.
The push for readiness comes amid political disputes over military funding. Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch accused the government of delaying necessary spending decisions. This tension follows the resignation of Chancellor John Healey from the Defence Secretary role over spending disputes; Healey is expected to present a Budget on October 28 that will be scrutinized for military allocations.
These domestic efforts coincide with international military activity, including Exercise Rhino Titan in Germany, where over 2,500 British and French troops conducted NATO war games. The Be Ready initiative follows similar guidance previously issued by the European Union.
