Israeli Settlers Seize Eight Homes Near Jericho
Israeli settlers seized eight homes in al-Duyuk al-Tahta near Jericho, sparking disputes over land ownership and reports of violence during the takeover.
Israeli settlers seized eight empty homes in the village of al-Duyuk al-Tahta, west of Jericho, on Wednesday evening. The takeover was facilitated by Nachala, a right-wing organization that funds settlements and advocates for the annexation of Palestinian territories. Approximately 30 settlers and their families entered the properties by smashing doors and remaining inside.
Simultaneous with the seizure, Israeli military forces entered Jericho and its refugee camps, deploying vehicles throughout the city streets. The settlement watchdog Peace Now reported that the takeover involved violence, including the shooting of a Palestinian man in the leg and the assault of two Israeli activists.
Disputes over the legality of the move have emerged. Settler representative Hanan Greenwood claims the homes were purchased legally. However, Hussein Hamayel, governor of the Jericho region, asserts the land is owned by the Palestinian Authority and that the sale documents are forged. The new outpost is located in Area C, which remains under full Israeli control.
