Montana Ranks Third for Republican Migration Growth
MovingPlace data shows Montana has one of the highest rates of Republican move-ins in the U.S., challenging narratives that liberals are dominating state migration.
Data from MovingPlace indicates that Montana is experiencing one of the highest rates of Republican migration in the United States, ranking third for the increase of Republican move-ins behind only Idaho and South Carolina. These findings challenge local narratives suggesting that liberal relocators are negatively impacting the state's political landscape.
Between January and August 2026, Montana recorded 4,044 moves from Democratic-leaning states compared to 3,604 from Republican-leaning states. Washington, California, and Colorado were the top three source states for these migrations. Despite the Democratic lean of these origin states, the overall trend shows a significant surge of conservative-leaning individuals relocating to Montana as Election Day approaches.
This pattern aligns with a 2024 analysis by the Montana Free Press, which found that nearly three Republicans moved to the state for every two Democrats. Montana's net migration rate stood at 2.54 moves per 1,000 residents, the third-highest among Republican-leaning states.
