Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov Seeks U.S. Investment in New York
President Sadyr Japarov met with U.S. government officials and financial leaders in New York to secure investment for infrastructure and banking projects.
President Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan held a series of meetings with U.S. government officials and business executives in New York on September 21 to expand economic, financial, and infrastructure cooperation. Japarov focused on attracting American technology and investment to modernize Kyrgyzstan's economy and increase its access to international financial markets.
In discussions with Citibank Managing Director Stephanie von Friedeburg, Japarov explored establishing new correspondent banking relationships and the potential opening of a Citibank branch in Kyrgyzstan. The two parties referenced a previous collaboration in April 2026, when Citigroup served as the lead arranger for Eldik Bank's $500 million debut Eurobond placement. Japarov also presented several national projects for investment, including the Kambar-Ata-1 hydropower project, the Asman eco-city, and the Ala-Too Resort.
Japarov further met with U.S. government representatives, including Special Envoy Paolo Zampolli and officials from the Department of Commerce and the Export-Import Bank. These talks centered on transport networks, specifically the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway slated for completion by 2030. Japarov noted the project would increase freight volumes, prompting discussions with the company Wabtec regarding upgraded rolling stock.
Additionally, Japarov met with StoneX Group CEO Philip Smith to discuss price risk management and trade in precious metals. Both parties aimed to build upon existing cooperation in the metals trade to implement more modern financial instruments and international settlement systems.
