US State Legislators Adopt AI to Draft Laws

United States state legislators are adopting artificial intelligence and chatbots to streamline the research and drafting of new laws. This shift is primarily driven by high workloads and a lack of institutional support within various state governments.

The trend is most prominent in South Dakota, where lawmakers manage the smallest legislative staff in the country. With only about 60 staffers available to support 70 representatives in the House, members of the South Dakota House of Representatives are utilizing AI tools to compensate for the personnel gap.
