National-led Coalition Holds Slim Lead in New Zealand Election

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon leads a narrow center-right coalition majority, though special votes and a new kingmaker party leave the final result uncertain.

New Zealand is operating under a caretaker government after the November 7, 2026, general election resulted in a deadlock between the two major parties. Preliminary results show the New Zealand National Party and its coalition partners, ACT and New Zealand First, holding a slim majority with 67 seats in a projected 131-seat Parliament. The opposition bloc, led by the New Zealand Labour Party and the Green Party, holds 57 seats.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon claimed a pathway to a second term but admitted the result is "too close to call" pending the count of up to 700,000 special votes. These votes historically favor left-leaning parties and could overturn the current majority. The election also saw the breakthrough of the centrist Opportunity Party, which secured seven seats and may act as a kingmaker, though Luxon has expressed reservations about their proposed land tax.

The New Zealand National Party suffered significant personnel losses due to a drop in its party vote share and a parliamentary overhang. High-profile casualties include Finance Minister Nicola Willis, Justice and Defence Minister Paul Goldsmith, Attorney-General Chris Bishop, and Speaker Gerry Brownlee, all of whom are unlikely to return to Parliament. Conversely, the ACT party secured a seat for former broadcaster Paul Henry, and New Zealand First gained former All Blacks captain Taine Randell.

Final official results are expected by November 27, with all members of Parliament required to be seated by January 14, 2027. The election was characterized by record-low combined support for the two major parties and a focus on cost-of-living crises.
